High on a hilltop overlooking New Braunfels, this log fortress was erected by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels between 1844-1847. Today the building is known as the Sophienburg Museum. Inside are thousands of items, including newspapers from the 1850s, oral history tapes, photographs and numerous period pieces and artifacts. Museum of Texas Handmade Furniture Located in Heritage Village, the Museum of Texas Handmade Furniture exhibits a collection of over seventy pieces of Texas Biedermeier furniture (circa 1845 to 1880) including prominent local German cabinetmakers Jahn, Stauzenberger, Scholl and Tietze. Buckhorn Barbershop & Museum resembles a 1900s barbershop and also houses numerous collectibles, such as mini-circus figures and pictures made from minerals, gems and stones. Tours of the barbershop are available by request. The building is open weekends during the year, and daily (except for Wednesdays) from mid-May until the end of August, all from 2pm to 5pm.
